Heavenly harmonies are a great way to start a record. It’s a soaring 15-second kick-off to Derek Hoke’s Electric Mountain, the East Nashvillian’s latest where he drifts through mid-tempo Roots Rockers and down-tempo Electro Folk. Those harmonies from the opener “Wild and Free” are laid out for this dreamy and even up-lifting opener, reminding us that ‘the sun will shine in the morning’. It’s a bright sunshine psychedelic ballad where Pedal Steel and six-string guitar dabble in jam. Electric Mountain then carries on dropping grade-A roots music. “Hush Your Mouth” is a Blues Rocker with killer slide-guitar, “That’s My Woman” is a laid-back shuffler that revisits those dreamy elements, and “Get Gone” has groovy keys; subtle, pulsing accordion that fills small nooks in the music and a mellow vibe. That chill effect continues with “Novocaine” and the Electric Mountain ends as it begins, with a drifting visions and vibes floating with light gentleness for “On Top of the Mountain.” These are sounds of yesterday and today. The slide guitar that comes and goes through the ten tracks give the record a blues vibe, its faraway ambience giving it a dose if Indie Psych, and other instruments like the pedal steel and accordion keeping you guessing. All combined it’s like an Indie nod to Classic Rock with a singer-songwriter twist.
