The latest from decker. aka Brandon Decker, finds the musician adding some experimental natural ambient textures to the structured arrangement in his songs. The cuts on Ouroboros flow from one to the next, a psychedelic Indie Roots Rock record that has stand-alone tunes while also ready to be served as one large, completed suite of music. The large serving begins with “Nebula (Prelude)”, a wordless, cinematic opener that drifts in from all over, coming together to kick into the soft “Eos (Endless Light)”. “Tidal (Like a Birth)” follows, where lightly rambling, twangy guitar plays under decker.’s reverb-heavy vocals. “Supernovae” follows, a horn heavy, trippy cut with R&B leanings that gives way to “Limbs”, where symphonic strings play under an emotionally delivered vocal. The Punky, pulsing, Surf Rock of “Mohave”, the lazy, dreamy Folk in “Sea Change”, and the big, horn-heavy beautifully crafted “My Gift”, where decker. shows he can be a R&B crooner. It’s a standout cut. Ouroboros closes as it begins, with a cinematic piece of ambience, the title track in “Ouroboros (Sans Fin)” scores the album as the credits roll. Ouroboros is appropriately titled. “Sans Fin” translating from French to English as ‘endless’, it is as if the track 10 ending could bleed loop back into track one, beginning, and reliving, the cycle again and again. And that’s okay. This is an album where you’ll want to just let it begin again after it ends, the needle raising and dropping, the settings on repeat.
