David G Smith is a seasoned singer and songwriter whose string of solo albums have won him a respectable following that remains just shy of widespread recognition. His songs have frequently been covered by other artists and have also been tapped for various television programs over the years. He’s worked alongside several distinguished artists, among them Keb Mo and Mary Gauthier, and has shared stages with the likes of Griffin House, Rory Block, Dave Moore, and Kelly Willis. To his credit, Smith’s also known for his charitable efforts and the support he’s given such organizations as St. Jude Children's Hospital and Boys Town, and those that work to find cures for Rett Syndrome, Parkinson’s Disease, and Alzheimer's Disease. Nevertheless, David G Smith’s thoughts and observations on the current state of society, as expressed on his new album Witness Trees, may be just the thing that wins him the fuller attention he so decidedly deserves. The album touches on various topics that have come into question in recent years, with song titles that define them on first glance — “Women Are Not Equal”, “Weight You Carry”, and “To Be Human”, in particular. Nevertheless, it’s the track called “Give Us Free” sums his concerns up succinctly:, ‘We must stand up, we must speak For the strong and for the weak For those who’ve come before us Whose voices form this chorus - Give Us Free’. David G Smith shares his sentiments through a series of mellow, melodic tunes that give consistency to the album overall. That said, opening track “River Gonna Talk” is underscored by a jagged rhythm while “Weight You Carry”, “I Wanna Go Out”, and “Let’s Take Our Time and Do It Right” opt for perkier pacing that gives the album its occasional upbeat energy. Regardless, the points are well made without overt preachiness or pontification. So too, the music bears a kind of folk finesse that maintains the messaging without forfeiting any obvious accessibility. In short, Witness Trees allows both concept and creativity to bloom through equal emphasis.
