Dale Watson (from the album Starvation Box on Cleopatra Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Dale Watson has always been, and will always be, old-school Country cool. Dig into his catalog and you’ll hear the Classic Country that serves as his influences; diving into his latest in Starvation Box and you’ll hear that Watson is O.G. Outlaw Country dude unafraid to display other styles via a Country music cocktail that remains a gritty gift. Starvation Box album opener, and title track, has a Blues vibe, the acoustic picking and harp pushing out big sound despite its simplicity. There is humor in the spoken word “Whatever Happened to the Cadillac” as Dale Watson tosses around ‘back in my day’ ideals while he throws down a load of Soul in “That’s Where the Money Goes”. “Nothingville” is a bit of Roots Lounge, “I Ain’t Been Living Right” is a fantastic feast of Folk (and nod to a John Hartford classic) as Watson offers a blast of the Blues in “Adios”. “Down Down Down” is CowPunk, “Two Peas in a Pod” a lovely Country duet as Dale is joined by his wife Celine Lee. Starvation Box closes with a rousing Gospel cut in “Ain’t Nobody Everybody Loved”. It’s got great Gospel harmonies and fantastic flat-picking amidst a click-clack, locomotive rhythm. Dale Watson is a modern-day classic as he shapes Classic Country for 2023. He’s also following in the footsteps of his influences, a country dude that knows the ‘genre’ of Country music can stretch well beyond its walls.
