Cordovas (from the album The Rose of Aces available on ATO Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
This is groovin’ Country Rock. A Laurel Canyon vibe in a package of laidback Roots Rock, Cordova’s do the Cosmic Country thing stretching in to a jam. Cordovas latest, The Rose of Aces, has songs that are lazy and loose packed alongside two Rockers with a curveball closer. The Rock comes quickly in The Rose of Aces with track number one nodding to “Fallen Angels of Rock’n’Roll”, the story a nod to the breeding grounds of Rock’n’Roll as Cordovas sing ‘all the roads to Memphis to Muscle Shoals’ while dropping quick Country Punk blasts between verses, asking ‘how many times did music save your soul?’ . The second Rock cooker comes in “Love Is All it Takes” when it challenges an upbeat pulse that moves and shakes with Duane Allman-style slide fills and an overall Southern Rock vibe the moves into album closer, “Somos Iguales” where Cordovas drop a percussion heavy Latin rhythm fest. The bulk of the album between the opening and closing tracks are wonderful groovers. “What is Wrong” and “Skyline” are from the Yacht Rock catalog while “High Roller” has wonderful interplay between pedal steel and piano in a cut about a drug fueled getaway. “Deep River” is ready for hippie-twirling, “Stone Cold Stoned” has a Red Sovine vibe minus the 18-wheelers, and “Change the Way You Talk” is an end of the night, drunken singalong cut. Love this record for its thick Country instrumentation, its soft harmonies, and its Rock’n’Roll Country Bar vibe.
