Connor Garvey (from the album Another End of a Year available on COGAR Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Musician Connor Garvey’s sound is in a comfortable place. Light, airy and drifting, he’s a musician who has crafted a listener friendly yet the casual feel for Another End of a Year, his recent release. Influences swim in a big pool with Connor Garvey as a music fan however there’s an overall Indie-vibe that is attractive to the discerning taste. Mellow and quiet yet with layers of instrumentation offering sharp little guitar stabs, those embellishments beginning stroll right out of the gate for Another End of a Year. The album opener in “The Boat” is an ambient offering, Garvey laidback in his croon, the melodies sailing away towards the end of the track blown by gentle guitar work.
“Break the Cage” has a Bluesy groove with mellow keyboard work and Garvey almost scatting his vocals. “All These Things” has Connor Garvey harmonizing with himself in a cut that has a Mac Demarco vibe, while the title track is easy, a quiet ballad.
Connor Garvey is great at the construction of mellow grooves; you’ll hear that model in “Will of the Trail”, a tune that has 1977 written all over it; something for the Yacht Rock crowd. He’s a straight-up Folkie on “The Song” and “The Man I Want to Be”, Connor Garvey’s vocal delivery taking on a Dylan vibe without sounding like Dylan in a song of inspiration and motivation.
It’s tough to put a time-stamp on this record. Connor Garvey proves to be both a great songwriter and avid song-listener. Another End of a Year pulls from 21st Indie Rock, Laurel Canyon Country Rock, and all things Folk as well as including AM Radio gold circa the Carter Administration. (by Bryant Liggett)
