Colter Wall (from the album Little Songs available on Black Hole Music/LaHonda Music/RCA Records)
The stories captured in Little Songs stay close to home. Colter Wall paints an audio picture of the Canadian West, using his Little Songs recent release to introduce the men and women of his home territory as they battle weather and finances. The music is toe-tapping while the tone of the tales is somber. Little Songs quiets to campfire picking to begin the story of “The Coyote and The Cowboy” as a honky tonk waltz spins around “Corralling the Blues” while Colter Wall marks stops on the map as he travels the western prairie in “The Last Loving Words”. Colter Wall has a voice mellowed in age, drawing listeners in for his stories, capturing them with the familiarity of the strums and rhythms. Little Songs is an old friend, the music as welcome as a fresh breeze and warm as a raging fire ringed with oldtimers and the stories they tell. “Cow/Calf Blue Yodel” showcases Colter Wall’s wail as he becomes the “Honky Tonk Nighthawk” on a sturdy Country backbeat and shuffles his feet pondering modern life in “Standing Here” as Little Songs put a Southwest musical border touch in a song dedicated to a desert rose in “Evangelina”.
