Chris Milam (from the album Orchid South available on M Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Memphis is more than Beale Street and Blues. Many an Indie Rocker have proved so, from Cory Branan to Steve Selvidge, and Chris Milam continues to also prove that Memphis remains one of the great music cities of the Indie Rock world, his latest in Orchid South, a solid offering of Indie Folk and fringe Punk as well as Rock. It’s hard rocking and thoughtful, fist-pumping and fierce, a record that can be wild and reckless but also quiet and contemplative; simply put its an album loaded with goodness, from Milam’s clean vocals to the punchy and clean horns and stabbing guitar solos. Chris Milam starts the record with jangle in the title track, building a 1980’s vibe within a cut ripe for a sing-along; it’s wonderful. He captures a little bit of Pal Westerberg and the rest of The Replacements in “Almost Gone,” a cut that’s perfect for summer hanging, and horns and big riffs rear their head in “Cut Myself Shaving”. There’s more 80’s-like Indie Rock in “Always On My Mind”, he drops a dreamy cut in “Bad Dream” and “Celebrity Now” is loaded with Rock riffage, riffage that continues in the new wave hinting and clean, punky vibe of “Out”. He closes with a song ripe for a young teenage slow dance in “Song of the Summer”, a cut ripe to score hazy summer memories. What a fun record. Its everything in all the right places, dramatic and dreamy, rocking and real. Orchid South is like Milam has dropped a score for your life.
