Charley Crockett (from the album $10 Cowboy available on Son of Davy Records/Thirty Tigers) (by Danny McCloskey)
Charley Crockett is a son of the American West. He plays the role of a $10 Cowboy on his recent release, dealing out a dozen songs with an ease that moves him to the top of the list for smooth Country crooners. With a well-timed drawl, Charley Crockett borders the collection of tunes with the album theme, opening on the $10 Cowboy title track and closing out with “Midnight Cowboy”. In between are stories pulled from the life of a traveling cowboy troubadour. He spots a “Diamond in the Rough” in a sweet and tender love song. Charley wears the skin of a down-on-his-luck traveler for “Good at Losing” and chews on a rolling rhythm to tell the tale in “City of Roses”. Charley Crockett packs a true believer credibility in each song and story in $10 Cowboy. True to the tales, $10 Cowboy was written over a two-month period as Charley Crockett stared out the windows of a tour bus. He describes the process as ‘this material is written at truck stops, it’s written at casinos, it’s written in the alleys behind the venues, it’s written in my truck parked up on South Congress in Austin. A ramblin’ man like me, a genuine transient, is in a pretty damn good position to have something to say about America’. A marching drum beat propels Charley Crockett as he sings an open letter to “America” as he heads down a “Solitary Road” and deals with “Hard Luck and Circumstance” while he admits that he “Ain’t Done Losing Yet”. His rocket-taking-off career is well-deserved. Charley Crockett is the sonic son of Hank Williams.
