Catherine Campbell (from Leave No Trace available as an independent release) (by Lee Zimmerman)
With her sophomore EP, Leave No Trace, Chattanooga, Tennessee-based singer-songwriter Catherine Campbell comes across as a humble artist with outstretched ambitions. Her music reflects her penchant for Pop but it’s her expressive nature that allows her to significantly stand out. She’s assertive to a fault, as three of the five songs on the new EP make clear. “Samuel”, “Wild and Free”, and “Shivers” — the latter a song co-written by Nick Cave and Rowland Howard — find her going forward with a deliberate determination, each offering underscored with a steady stomp reflective of some earnest intent. Likewise, “Right Reasons”, as its title implies, finds her in a meditative mood, flush with serious sentiment:
‘It was not our fate to fall in love that way
But we took our chances, no second glances
A glimmer of hope, or so it. seemed…
We were far too young
A little overdue
For a good hard look inside
So our hearts burst open wide…’
Granted, that could be considered overthinking a supposed scenario on some level, but it’s clear that Campbell considers making music a craft as opposed to any sort of fickle diversion. “Smiling” is graced by both mood and melody, all lovely, lingering reflection and subtle, yet soothing sentiment:
‘You kissed me in the dark
With a soft smile
The air is always warm there
In my memories, in my memories’
Clearly, Catherine Campbell’s still initiating her musical journey, but it’s already clear at this point that she possesses the insight and intuition needed to connect along the way. Insight and intellect are rare qualities, but they’re still essential when it comes to leaving an indelible imprint. With Leave No Trace, Catherine Campbell does just that. (By Lee Zimmerman)
