Carolina Story (from the album Colors of My Mind available on Carlina Story/Soundly Music) (by Bryant Liggett)
The latest album release from Carolina Story is dark and dramatic, quiet and ambient. It’s a personal album of serious material for Ben and Emily Roberts aka Carolina Story, released at a time where Ben has overcome personal struggles, which, in turn, may have influenced the recordings solemn nature. While Colors of My Mind is a Roots record in nature, it does not have any front-porch picking appeal, coming off moreover as modern radio Rock, with subtle hints of Americana.
Colors of My Mind, with Ben singing of self, admitting in the album opener “Animal” that ‘under my skin I’m just like you’. Those aforementioned subtle hints of Americana are quite present in the jangle of “It’s a Drag” with Emily handling the vocals, and she continues those vocal duties, delivering them soft and delicate, yet also quite rich on “Colors of My Mind” and “Painted Lady”. Their vocals are strongest when together, as in “Angel on the Line”, Emily is the predominant voice, hovering just above Ben’s, his vocal supporting her singing. The cut has a wonderful play between a jam-guitar and playful keys.
These songs don’t punch, nor do they stand alone. Colors of My Mind is delivered as a package of audio that dreamily drifts in. The soaring sound is aided by the use of pedal steel guitar, not there for melody or solos allow Carolina Story to deliver the album like a dreamy gift.
