Black Pumas  (from the album Chronicles of a Diamond

Black Pumas  (from the album Chronicles of a Diamond available on ATO Records)  (by Danny McCloskey)
Like a street parade ramping up its rhythmic stroll, Black Pumas strut into Chronicle of a Diamond on the smooth groove of “More Than a Love Song”. The band’s latest release continues Black Pumas unspoken mission of creating Rock’n’Soul sounds for the future. Adrian Quesada guides the melodies over solid backbeats for vocalist Eric Burton to move from a whisper to a scream (“Ice Cream (Pay Phone)”. As Black Pumas, Quesada and Burton hold the banner high for classic Soul from the 60’s through the 80’s. Using the Sound of Soul from past decades Black Pumas blend an intuitive implementing of hybrid arrangement that seamlessly blend psychedelic tones with the power of Funk and the tender words of Folk on Chronicles of a Diamond. Based in Austin, Texas, Black Pumas manage to stretch the boundaries of trends with music that is as fresh a tomorrow while staying as familiar as an old friend.

The lyrical flow of “Tomorrow” gives the track a freeform poetry slam feel over a potent undercurrent groove as Chronicles of a Diamond bids “Hello” on a musical dreamscape, marches to a regimented rhythm for “Rock and Roll”, and introduces “Mrs. Postman” on an infectious Jazz/Funk beat. Black Pumas channel Curtis Mayfield for the Chronicles of a Diamond title track as they weave a misty mood of melodies around “Angel”, and bounce on a space groove of musical blips and bleeps as they circle “Gemini Sun”.
