Bernard Allison (from the album Luther’s Blues available on Ruf Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Bernard Allison is a Blues dude with plenty of accessories and assets in his back, front, and shirt pockets. Those add-ons being healthy doses of Soul grooves, Funk attacks and plenty of you-can’t-sit-down-yet Rock’n’Roll, all simmered well into his Blues roux base, spread on thick and spilling out on the record, on the stage, and anywhere Bernard Allison presents music. For verification of these claims, Bernard Allison delivers a double dose LP bursting with freshness via his latest in Luther’s Blues. Rock charges from funky wah-wah to 1980’s metal power chords with album opener “Hang On” bursting at the seams with riffs that are punchy and big. It is an excellent calling card. Horns introduce the funky “Too Many Women” and “Bad Love”, both cuts where the opening blasts quickly give way to Bernard Allison’s searing guitar. “Help” closes the first disc finding Allison roaring through a cut that’s Punk, Metal, and original Rock’n’Roll all in one… and more of same is in store on LP#2. “Life is a Bitch” offers punchy, funky horns, “Change Your Way of Living” is a rolling piano ballad straight out of the New Orleans dive bar, and things close with a slow dose of Folk in “Castle”. Yes, Bernard Allison is quite the folkie as well! Folk aside, this is a searing guitar album; every time a much-wanted horn-section piles in, Allison is right there with that blistering hot guitar, with the guitar supporting the horns, or horns supporting the guitar. It’s an even exchange on an even-keeled album that’s a hot dose of Blues Rock.
