Band of Horses (from the album Things Are Great

Band of Horses (from the album Things Are Great available on Huger Lewis and the Dudes, Inc/BMG) (by Danny McCloksey)
The songs for Things Are Great, the recent release from Band of Horses are emotionally intense. The stories from the pen of Ben Bridwell, band founder and frontman, are framed around personal issues, digging deep into the how’s and why’s of our decision process. While the tunes were written before the world shut down, the Band of Horses recording of the tracks post-pandemic incarceration. Things Are Great acts as a questionnaire, priming self-awareness with a soundtrack that becomes a mirror for our own lives. A slow trudge wanders across “In the Hard Times” as the storyline points fingers and hopes for a prodigal return. Band of Horses open the album with “Warning Signs”, the track offering clues over a persistent guitar jangle and pounding rhythm, exiting Things Are Great on the chant of “Coalinga” as they celebrate the lingering scent that sticks with you as touring takes you through the I-5 California corridor.
Ben Bridwell role for Things Are Great went beyond his traditional frontman and songwriter jobs as he produced or co-produced each cut on the album. A train track beat pushes the non-stop groove in “Ice Night We’re Having” while hints of breezy island rhythms ground “In Need of Repair” amid guitar sonics. Band of Horses create recorded sounds that maintain an organic feel and form, erasing the lines between studio and stage, presenting Things Are Great in a natural setting. Stop/start beats and gentle strums roll under the story of “Tragedy of the Commons” as it juggles responsibilities with desires while Band of Horses examine a crime scene under “Lights” and dance the relationship tango with “Crutch”.  (by Danny McCloskey)
