Amigo the Devil (from the album Yours Until the War is Over available from Liars Club/Regime Music Group) (by Danny McCloskey)
Quiet footsteps of musical notes are the rhythm when Amigo the Devil enters Yours Until the War is Over, his recent release. In addition to beginning the song cycle, the first cut “Hanging by the Roots” sets the tone for Yours Until the War is Over. Its story rambles, an Old West saga that fleshes out a tale pieced together with seemingly disparate snippets of collected words whose characters gather around the phrase ‘victim of the rope’. In “The Mechanic” Amigo the Devil makes an effort to repair a broken relationship as he introduces “Agnes” by way of a rambling whispered prayer set against a dark angel choir. He spins a narrative of bad decisions for “Once Upon a Time in a Texaco pt.1” and marches on a cacophony on beats to claim “It’s All Gone”. Amigo the Devil is the master of a pen, his lyrics, and stories, raw and dark, filled with literary name-drops, cinematic in both scope and scale. Of the album, Danny Kiranos aka Amigo the Devil feels that ‘I don’t really know what to say about this album because it was such a positive and free experience surrounding the creation of it. The idea that all we have are positive memories regarding songs exploring seemingly hopeless and regretful, often traumatic situations won’t make sense to a lot of people but maybe that’s the whole point of the record. Yours Until the War is Over… although a reference to the vibrant yet fragile connection between Hemingway and Nurse Agnes, it isn’t their story feeding the songs, just a road map for every scenario collected here. I can’t tell if this record was the war or the love story but now that we’re through it, it’s not ours anymore. We’re so damn grateful to have gone through it either way’. Rolling clouds of sonics follow “Stray Dog” as “Cannibal Within” becomes a resume-laden monologue while Yours Until the War is Over shouts “I’m Going to Heaven” with a melody that travels freely between Tom Waits and Waylon Jennings. Amigo the Devil is the Master of Ceremony for Yours Until the War is Over, walking through the sad story in “Garden of Leaving” on a flurry of fingerpicked notes to cradle a newborn angel as a foggy mist of acoustics floats on soundwaves and snippets of conversation and the album exits on “Closer”.
