Amelia White (from the album Love I Swore

Amelia White (from the album Love I Swore available on 31 Tigers  Records) (by Lee Zimmerman)

Amelia White’s reputation as one of Nashville’s most captivating singer/songwriters has increased substantially with each and every new release. And for good reason. Assured and emotive, White’s songs come across with an authority and determination that gets straight to the heart of her sentiment and intents.

Nevertheless, though her feelings are relayed personally and profoundly, she manages to do so with tongue occasionally planted ever slightly in cheek. So too, while Love I Swore offers a discourse revolving around bracing emotional issues — the struggle to maintain core relationships, dealing with loss and loneliness, and, in particular, the difficulties and diversions encountered by road-weary musicians ('All I wanna do is get up there and sing. I don’t wanna hear about ice on the wing’, she declares on “Get to the Show”, one of the new album’s many standout selections) — the album is far more than a mere checklist of trials and trauma. White manages to make each scenario both personal and pertinent, while also expressing those realities in real life ways. It’s hardly surprising then that “Get to the Show” was actually inspired by Amelia White being stranded in an airport while trying to get to her next gig.

As a result, the songs are as affecting as the subject matter might imply. They’re both personal and passionate, and yet, the accessibility factor never settles for second place. The steady strides taken through the album’s various offerings — “Something New Comes”, “Time”, and “I Follow the River” — offer the impression that White’s resolve remains consistently intact, but other songs share her sentiments in equally effective ways. “Beautiful Dream” is as ebullient as the title suggests, while “Don’t You Ever Forget”, “Don’t Know Her”, and “Nothing I Can do” share soothing thoughts and a mellower mood. There’s a certain sway and sashay conveyed through “Can You See Me Now”, a song which features producer Kim Richey on support vocals, just as the title track provides it’s own sort of sensual serenade.

Taken in tandem Love I Swore is a testament to White’s powers of persuasion — that is, her ability to involve the listener and leave behind an emphatic impression. It’s everything a set of songs should be — personal, provocative and flush with earnest emotion. As a result, Amelia White has made a definitive statement and also the most defining album of her career. The love she swears to is clearly evident throughout. (by Lee Zimmerman)
