Amelia White (from Rocket Rearview

Amelia White (from Rocket Rearview on White Wolf Records) (by Lee Zimmerman)

Amelia White could easily be defined as one of the most honest and forthright singer/songwriters East Nashville has to offer, no small accomplishment in a realm that’s literally teeming with talent. Her new album, Rocket Rearview, is an excellent example of that particular penchant, an eleven-song set that is, by turns, both ominous and affecting. Amelia White doesn’t put any check on her expression of emotion, and whether she’s sharing the reassurance suggested by the title track, reflecting on the solidarity found in an expression of true love courtesy of “No Sound”, or simply asserting her opinion in the face of present day threats and circumstances, by way of songs such as “Devil’s Gonna Eat You Alive” and “In the Time”, she remains both assertive and assured.

That said, White’s in good hands given the oversight of Dave Coleman, the multi-talented producer and musician who helms the proceedings. He helps underscore the album’s verve and versatility, allowing Amelia White to fully embrace the emotion and empathy so inherent in each of these offerings. Despite the dark clouds that hang over much of the proceedings, White offers no shortage of assurance, infusing a calm and caress that lingers through the mellow musings of “January and June”, “Waltzing with Your Ghost”, “My Way Home”, “Beautiful Sun”, and “Hands Are Like Faces” in particular.

Of course, Amelia White’s adept at reliable rockers as well. “Fighting” proves that point, while the sturdy strains of “Edge of the Blues” show an unflinching attitude that’s both persistent and pervasive as well.

Amelia White has proven her prowess for some time now, and over the course of her career, she’s made it a point to convey a sound that’s immersed in empathy and understanding, all while peering fearlessly towards the future. Here again, Rocket Rearview offers an indelible example. It’s a searing, soaring triumph flush with both tenderness and tenacity, qualities that no one ever ought to take for granted.
