It’s often said that you have to pay your dues if you want to play the Blues, and yet Ally Venable might in fact be an artist that proves otherwise. She released her debut album at age 16 years old, making her name in the Blues world early on as a formidable guitarist, singer and songwriter. She’s come a long way since then, and now, five albums on, there’s no doubt as to her credence and capabilities. For starters, her new album, Real Gone, finds her surrounded by an exceptional cast of musicians, including renowned producer Tom Hambridge as well as special guests Buddy Guy and Joe Bonamassa, certainly two of the bigger names within the entirety of today’s Blues realms. So too, she’s coming off multiple kudos and achievements including the prestigious ‘Road Warrior Award’ given at the Independent Blues Music Awards, and a featured role in the Experience Hendrix Show where she appeared alongside such guitar greats as Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Zack Wilde, Eric Johnson, and Dweezil Zappa. Nevertheless, as Real Gone proves so convincingly, Venable is perfectly poised to stand on her own merits. She’s capable of purveying powerful rockers along the lines of the title track, “Any Fool Should Know”, “Kick Your Ass”, and “Texas Louisiana” (her Funk-fueled duet with Buddy Guy), while proving equally adept at bringing absolute emotion into play, as evidenced by the slow soulful blues of “Gone So Long”, “Going Home”, and “Blues is My Best Friend”. She is in essence consistently compelling and decidedly demonstrative throughout. That’s owed in large part not only to her searing vocals, but also to her dynamic fretwork, which is both decisive and demonstrative at every turn. It finds her wailing away like a classic guitar slinger of old, even as it elevates her to the highest ranks of today’s hotshot guitar gurus. Indeed, it’s Ally Venable’s urgency, expression, and delivery that prevail overall, and when she asserts that relentless resolve on “Hold My Ground”, that indomitable attitude becomes all the more emphatic. Real Gone proves yet again that without a doubt she is nothing less than the real deal.
