Alex Williams (from the album Waging Peace available on Lightning Rod Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Alex William’s sophomore effort is the kind of record that offers some insightful self-help while also dropping some indulgent Outlaw Country Rockers. Waging Peace finds the Indiana native digging into a search for personal peace in his ballads, while also offering Country Rock power chords and dance-floor shuffles; Alex Williams is a musician who can slow it down and charge it up. Williams won’t look for a fight, but he won’t run from one either. On album opener in “No Reservations”, Alex admitting he ‘ain’t looking for any trouble, but he ain’t turning any trouble down’ and he continues his reflective questions and admissions on the contemplative cuts “Rock Bottom” and the Folkier “The Struggle”. But the fun is in the bangers. “Old Before My Time” has the click-clack locomotive Country rhythm while “Double Nickel” is a charging, road hard trucking tune that references dodging smokies; it’s the kind of cut you want to crank while blowing down a highway. Then there’s “The Best Thing” which tells you Alex Williams proves he has done his old-school Country homework when he drops a crying in your beer ballad, making it sound like it is 1972 AM Gold. There’s a Soulful, Rootsy groove in “Fire” and big dramatic sing-along efforts in “The Vice.” With Waging Peace, Alex Williams delivers a solid package of old-school Outlaw Country with a 2022 release date.
