A good Roots band should be able to entertain a bar crowd or a sit-down theatre audience equally. It’s a best of both worlds’ situation, as being a bar band means you can tour rowdy venues highlighting your Rock side while if you’re on stage in a concert venue you can still get gritty yet you have the option of tossing out a ballad or two as fans dig your mellow moods. The Aaron Ball Band can claim both sides of the coin, as the Roots Country outfit Aaron Ball Band EP has both bangers and ballads on full display supported by both Country and Rock. The EP opens with a Rocker. “I-35” is a kickass road song that features chicken-picking telecaster all through the melody as Aaron Ball sings about ‘semi-pro drivers’ taking jabs at sedan Nascar drivers and perhaps a few semi’s. It’s a Rocker with barroom piano and guitar riffs that rips throughout the whole cut. Ball is a strong balladeer. “New Strings” is a heavy cut of redemption and rebirth, singing the new touches on his six-string giving life to his instrument. It’s an act of some self-reflection amid self-improvement while “Sense of Humor” is a Folk track where Aaron Ball questions humanity via whomever you pray to and the being’s sense of humor. Aaron Ball Band EP is a clean record from a tight group who can throw out a contemplative slow cut that makes you think, then toss out a highway banger to make you dance.
