Alt Root Weekly Top Ten 5/08/24
In 1972 Leon Russell purchased a dilapidated building in Tulsa, Oklahoma and turned it into a world-class recording studio and home office for Shelter Records. Along with his business partner, producer, Denny Cordell, throughout the 1970s was studio was in full swing. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers got their start at The Church Studio and the history boasts many other legacy artists that walked through the doors including Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Kansas, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, George Harrison, Dwight Twilley, and Ringo Starr among many others. Carrying the torch into the future, The Church Studios in Tulsa is alive again, and under the guidance of Teresa and Ivan, has opened its doors for recording.
Paul Benjaman Band entered The Church Studio and emerged four-days later with the upcoming (06-07-24) My Bad Side Wants a Good Time. Topping the chart for weekly Top Ten for Wednesday May 8, 2024, Paul Benjaman Band deliver “Church of Space and Time”, a sonic ode to Leon Russell in both words and music. Backed by The Game Changers, Jim Lauderdale dons a Country suit to deliver the upcoming (06-21-24) My Favorite Place, making the chart introducing “Mrs. Green” as Michael and Kevin aka The Bacon Brothers put a musical history into a song with “The Ballad of the Brothers”. Charlie Overbey has no shortage of friends dropping by the recording studio and to tell the story in “Life of Rock’n’Roll” he is joined by Duane Betts, Eddie Spaghetti, Taime Downe, and Courtney Santana on a cut from his upcoming (06-26-24) release, In Good Company. Kaia Kater sings of “The Witch” as she is joined by Aoife O’Donovan for a tune from her upcoming (05-17-24) Strange Medicine while Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore hop aboard the “Southwest Chief”, heading the song towards their upcoming (06-21-24) release, Texicali, and Native Harrow admit to “Goin’ Nowhere” with a track from their upcoming (09-13-24) Divided Kind. Melissa Carper has an upcoming (07/19/24) release with Borned in Ya, on the chart with “Lucky Five” as Thomas Csorba smiles a confession in “Getting to the Good Part” and Karson City Rebels roar towards the list exit with the single “Runaway Train” on the weekly Top Ten for Wednesday May 8, 2024.
