Before launching into a weekly Top Ten for another year, The Alternate Root would like to take a look back at 2023, particularly paying attention to the cuts that landed in the #1 spot. Generally, Top Ten tracks announce an upcoming release or are one-off tunes to help promote touring. Two of the tunes included on the 2023 Top Ten wrap were released as a collective voice, performers lending both hands and harmonies to shine a light on causes. Will Hoge partnered with Black Opry and a multitude of local Nashville musicians in response to the color line on Country radio with “Can I Be Country Too?” while Margo Price partnered with Mavis Staples and Aida Victoria to benefit grassroots reproductive care facilities with “Fight to Make It”. Poking fun at southern culture in Selwyn Birchwood’s “FLorida Man”, signaling a resurgence with Lucinda Williams for “New York Comeback”, or shrugging with acceptance as Robert Finley does with “What Goes Around (Comes Around)”, the weekly chart tells the news with words and music. Righting old wrongs and beginning to heal wounds caused by greed, Charley Crockett revisits an Oklahoma tragedy in “Killers of the Flower Moon” as Jamie Wyatt tops the list reminding everyone that as the calendar pages flip, we still have a “World Worth Keeping”.
