10/3/2026 The Mary Wallopers (from the album PaddwackeryThe Mary Wallopers (from the album Paddwackery available on BC Records/Many Hats Distribution) (by Bryant Liggett)
To the average ear one may hear The Mary Wallopers and think they’re some St. Paddy’s Day drinking band. To those that know better, you will hear a band steeped in the history of traditional Celtic music, who also grew up with a kick ass record collection full of anything from The Clash to, of course, The Pogues. Those sounds continue on the band’s latest in Paddywhackery. Yes, the bulk of the album is bouncy good as background music, but it is worth digging into the lyrics because they are rich with stories and thoughtful inspiration. “Crowns of England” is a traveling tale of leaving home, only to return again, while “The Juice” is a song about being poor but finding solace with the like-minded fellow humans gathered in the pub. “Smuggling the Tin” could be centuries old, “Castlecoe Hill” is a revved up, rowdy blast of instrumental Celtic Punk, and “The Big Mixer” reminds us that when we’re gone the world is going to keep moving on. “The Workers Song” is a classic working men and women song, “Banks of the Roses” is a bouncing banger, and the closer, “The Mickey Dam”, is a stripped-down ballad that boasts of loyalty and strength. Like the long list of Western European bands and musicians that come before them, The Mary Wallopers deliver songs rich with characters and blue collar living. The lyrics are historical poetry, the music 21st Century traditional.
