Chicago-based band The Claudettes may get pinned as a Neo-Soul band but there’s so much more to their music. A throwback to a 1980’s vibe ripe for a John Hughes soundtrack, a danceable, and at times, tripped out New Wave band, the Claudettes stretch definitions, and expectations, with gusto on their latest release, Garage Glamour.
Front-woman Rachel Williams commands with stunning vocals that remain on display from the get-go and throughout Garage Glamour. She kicks off on a duet with Chicago blues royalty John Primer, who joins her on the thick, dramatically soulful album opener, “(You Are My) Whole World”. The throwback to times of The Breakfast Club are ever-present on a cut like “That Could Be Arranged” while the tune is also ripe for an on-stage musical. “Whirlpool” is sultry and sexy, the kind of tune ready to score a jaunt through the theatre district of any major city while also ripe for a dark cocktail club, “No Matter How Much” is another great tune that is waiting to be added into a Broadway show, and the album closer, “There is No Other Side”, is drifting and dreamy.
