Thirty plus years into his career, Jay Farrar has, at this point, defined his Son Volt sound. His style of Blues sounds like a brand for Farrar, same with his style of honky tonk. It is safe to say that the sometimes ambient, sometimes thick, drive of his version of Roots music is eternally patented. The Son Volt release, Sound Signal Serenades, is another solid release in a legendary catalog. The strummed acoustic guitar and keyboards that open the record on first cut “Kaleidosphere (Devil His Due)” is a beat-driven Roots Rocker with a hint of inspirational Gospel. Son Volt dabble in laidback, front porch Psychedelia in “Don Quixote’s Dream”, Country and ballad Blues that leans into modern R&B for “Hurricane Eye”, and “The New Low-Down” with its heavy keyboard lead is ripe for a pop playlist. Another favorite will be “This Mess of a World”; Jay Farrar may be preaching to a choir via the title, but he does so in skip down tune. It is great. The album closer takes the hint of Gospel heard in track one and kicks it into gear, “New Born Soul” a piano heavy Sunday Morning shout out. This is all 21st Century Country, Roots, and more. Sound Signal Serenades is a sound that remains true to Son Volt’s art, and true to Jay Farrar.
