The first notes and chord strums of “Like an Angel” set the pace for Smoketree, the recent release for husband/wife duo, The Kennedys. The soundtrack for the song is slow and easy Country Rock, Americana, and Singer/Songwriter Folk Rock. The Continental Club in Austin, Texas introduced Pete and Maura Kennedy in 1992. The pair played together within a few days, and their first song was born in short time. A first date took them on a road trip to Buddy Holly’s grave in West Texas. At the time, Pete Kennedy was a player in Nanci Griffith’s band, with Maura joining as a member soon after. They toured with Nanci Griffith as part of the band and as opening act. Touring, playing, and journeying has created a lifelong road trip for the couple.
 
The warmth of The Kennedys combined voices is a perfect blend of harmony. They deliver “Heal You” with a message given wing with their vocals as a dark rumble of rhythm issues a warning for “Puzzlewood”. A confident stride takes Smoketree across “Without Us”, picking up the pace for the twang-born groove of “Long Road to Freedom”. Maura Kennedy takes the lead vocal for the gentle sway of “Song for a Midday Dawn” while Pete hops back on board with harmony for the prancing beat of the Smoketree title track. The Kennedys look to the night sky for “A Star to Guide to You” before exiting the album on the sharp-angled notes that accent their observations on our current times with “Seed of Peace”.
