Seasick Steve is here to remind you that America may have ‘jumped the shark’. A phrase that is referenced when a TV show/band/Country may be running past its prime, his latest, The Last Season of America, a brutal and honest look at the state of things in the supposed land of the free. Seasick Steve call it like he sees it, opening the album up with the title track and comparing the U.S. to a television show void of business support, with no chance in reruns. Steve provides a simple, funky riff as he wonders where the good leaders went in “Bad Things”, as “Bootstraps” is a Psychedelic Blues fight song inspiring you to be active over passive, and he delivers a toe-tapper surf song for “Surf’s Flat”. Seasick Steve preaches holy truth in “Free Man”, a spoken word cut over Country Funk guitar where he criticizes all the hands in a musicians pocket, an attack song that inspires trimming the fat and going DIY; it is a life lesson in taking control. The Last Season of America is indeed protest music, the album closer, “Feel the Sun”, a Bluesy Gospel number with hopeful horns where Seasick Steve reminds us of our own power. He may be preaching to a choir. That message, however, isn’t ‘look how bad things are’. He is saying, ‘this is what I’m going to do, what are YOU going to do?’.
