Bringing her top shelf vocals to another project, songstress extraordinaire Melissa Carper offers an album of front porch picking and barn dance spinning with Sad Daddy, and the band’s recent release, Ozark Shine. Her bass strings pushing the beat, Melissa Carper is joined by Brian Martin, Joe Sundell, and Rebecca Patek in Sad Daddy. Shifting from slow dance sways to toe-tapping high-steppers, Ozark Shine gives dancing feet a reason to live with “Don’t You Take My Dollar Bill” as it jumps on a runaway train rhythm to carry the tale of “Kerosene Dream”.
Opening the album, Sad Daddy sends out a woozily swaying prayer with “Bootlegger” as a death rattle beat grounds the sweet sound of acapella voices when Melissa Carper guides the harmonies of “Down in the Hole” as it welcomes in random string riffs. A wandering mind shares it secrets in “Milk and Bread” as a jagged groove becomes the framework for “Broken Cup” and a determined rhythmic thump is a bed for the warnings of “Break into Your House”. Ozark Shine takes long strides that carry “I’ll Come Running” as Sad Daddy let their voices calm the second-guessing tale in “Did We Turn Off the Stove”.
