Rhiannon Giddens is well-versed in all things that may, or may not, fall under the term Americana. Old-time music, Blues, and Gospel are on the menu, and served up big, of course, however her latest in Hope is the Thing with Feathers finds Giddens also straying into a rough-around-the-edges Gothic Country, a sound reminiscent of 1990’s Bloodshot Records releases. Toss in driving, Rootsy trance tunes and you’ve got a candidate for a forever Folk favorite that will also sway into the Alt Country world.
While mentioning the great years of the aforementioned Chicago independent record label, Rhiannon Giddens title track is one word away from Trailer Bride’s “Hope is a Thing with Feathers”, and also would be in place in any Country Goth, Folky Noir world; fans of either will approve of the other genre. “Wish in Vain” is dramatic and familiar as drops a solid power ballad for “Carolina Rain” while “High on a Mountain” is ripe for a full-staged festival chorus.
The stripped-down simplicity of “Freight Train”, the driving rhythms “Cluck Old Hen”, and the harmony-heavy Gospel cuts “Walk With Me” and “Going Home” are textbook lessons in both American music style and history.
