A badass riff kicks open the doors of My Voice, the recent release from Laura Chavez. Gnarly guitar licks shout out the album title as Laura Chavez uses her six-string sword to carve a path across My Voice, her guitar assuming the lead role on the instrumental-only recording. Selecting a Creedence Clearwater Revival tune, Laura Chavez adopts a scorched-earth policy as she begins the song cycle on the album with “Born on the Bayou”. She borders the hyper-active entry into My Voice with closing cut “La Llorona”, the melody slower and sweeter though the guitar bite rips and tears with equal ferocity on the slow-cooking groove that partners with the ferocity of the album opener. Laura Chavez needs no words to make her point heard, or felt.
 
The rhythms are powerful when she plays “Chinese Checkers” as her guitar spits and snarls on a cover of The Blasters “So Long Baby, Goodbye”. The guitar notes play tag with organ swells for “Shot-Zee” as My Voice speaks with a Latin accent for “El Cascabel” and cruises down “Napa Street”, the wheels underneath the cut spinning sparks from the tasty licks of Laura Chavez. Her career began in a band with Lara Price when she was eighteen and landed a gig with Candye Kane in 2008 as lead guitarist, and co-producer, for the powerhouse singer’s final albums. Thick notes decorate the slowly chugging beat of “Mamba Negra” as My Voice doses the slow-roll rhythm in “Wanderer” with string picks that sparkle like a night sky as the guitar playing dances around the persistent groove of “Mind Your Step”. Laura Chavez is a master-class Blues musician, absorbing influences that are showcased in the spinning wheel of sounds that speak volumes without saying a word in My Voice. (by Danny McCloskey)
