For Joshua Ray Walker, the album title claim of Ain’t Dead Yet is a mantra that he shares with the world, and for the musician, it is a personal achievement. He battled, and received a thumbs up, for his cancer diagnosis; the songs on the album a document for his journey during treatment, both mental and physical. Being cancer free is a success story in itself, yet the path that Joshua Ray Walker took leaves unseen scars. Facing death, and a new perspective on a life that bears the trauma, became a not-necessarily-welcome muse for the songs on Ain’t Dead Yet. 
The title track opens the album. Over the slow sway of rhythm that supports the purity of his words, Joshua Ray Walker shares his experience as it clearly shows him taking charge of his life, stating ‘I think I’m ready to try again, done waiting around to die, my friends’. Reliving memories that received the news about his health, he weighs in on the experience, and the lessons he learned, with “Stepping Stones”. Sweet strums provide the rhythm for a Red Dirt slow turn around the dance floor in “Some People” as Ain’t Dead Yet wades through the deep waters of a ‘cruel, cruel world’ with “Capital Letters” and traces a family lineage, admitting he is the last in line for “Blue Genes”. The musical notes swirl and sparkle like a night sky when Joshua Ray Walker avoids the bright lights of a big city, issuing subtle requests as he feels the loss of every traveling musician in “Chasing Sunset”. A raucous groove carries “Shoot Me Straight” as the song is accented by an uptown Saturday night horn section when it delivers a satchel full of good advice in the storyline while Joshua Ray Walker offers judgments on California sober, detailing the how’s and why’s of his own personal regimen in “Texas Sober” before exiting Ain’t Dead Yet issuing a warm-hearted farewell with “Thanks for Listening”.
