Jim Lauderdale is no stranger to Bluegrass. He has trophies for two Grammy awards as Best Bluegrass album (2003, 2008), and many of the 39 record releases that have held his name have the singer/songwriter backed by string bands. Jim Lauderdale partners (again) with The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys on the recent release, The Birds Know. After seeing The Po’ Ramblin Boys at Merlefest, and releasing The Long and Lonesome Letting Go (2023) with the band, he knew that having them back him on another recording was a given. Jim shared that ‘these songs were all written just for this album. The Po' Ramblin' Boys keep the sound of traditional Bluegrass alive, but they really bring it into the present day. I'm so happy with the way this record turned out, and I’m looking forward to performing with them in the coming years. I love working with them so much’.
 
Jim Lauderdale and The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys enter The Birds Know high-stepping with “Two Crows”. The harmonies of “Pretty Little Diamonds” sing of tears falling as “Don’t Long Down” offers a DIY guide for living and “We Look at Things Differently” celebrates peace amid diversity. Top shelf playing and a bright bounce to the rhythms make The Birds Know an immediate desert island disc. A darkness rises in the somber story of “Chuck Will’s Widow” while The Po’ Rambllin’ Boys strum the rhythm of the rails as backing for “Rainbow Choo Choo Train” as Jim Lauderdale tells tales of the downsides in seemingly good decisions with “Life Has Way of Making Jokes (Don’t It)”. Swaying to the sweet sound of a string band “Innocent Heart” sends out prayers for its characters as The Birds Know relates a mountain tale for its title track while Jim Lauderdale & The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys offer advice and inspiration as they warn “Don’t Look Down”.  (by Danny McCloskey)
