There’s a handful of descriptors ripe for the latest from Avery Hellman’s  project as ISMAY. Their latest, Half Truth, can stretch the term of Alternative Country into an all-encompassing catch of gentle Pop and fringe AM Gold, digital or even blip Folk. Toss in terms like gentle or lush, and you’ve got all the makings for a dreamy recording.
“American Flag” is pushed by an electric pulse while “Torture Either Way” is a subtle, yet gentle, grooved Pop number with reverb heavy guitar fills. “The Let Down” has a killer, slow Blues, Garage Rock, riff, pulsing drums drive “Jesus Sign”, and steel guitar turns “Problems Galore” into a floating pillow of twang Folk. That reverb guitar returns to paint musical notes through “I Don’t Look at You” with more ambient steel drifting around “Wildfire”, with wonderful guitar patterns hanging between the vocals in “On the Honest Edge”.
Ismay delivers Half the Truth as a melodic masterpiece, with vocals that give the record its dreamy Pop credentials. Lines that reference ‘lattes’, ‘DIY’, and acts of window gazing will always perk an ear to simplistic but daily nature, as they remain picturesque with the poetry put to lush songs. (by Bryant Liggett)
