Among the many promises of a professional musician stacked up in “Charm, Looks or Money”, David Serby provides the biggest pledge with the sly smile of a traveling troubadour when he claims ‘I can make you cry on cue if you buy me a beer’. The track has a constant rumble of the rhythm riding underneath while David Serby slows the rhythm to a ripple when guitar notes sparkle in the tender touch of “If I Weren’t Me”. The songs, among others, are collected on Broken Heart in a Honky Tonk, the recent release from the Los Angeles-based musician. As his vocal slips comfortably from hard-driving highway songs to quiet barroom ballads, David Serby masterfully owns the role a roadhouse serenader. While the album title predicts a Broken Heart in a Honky Tonk, the recording of the album was sunshine and blue skies when David Serby was surrounded by A-list West Coast studio assistance. Album producer Edward Tree (Spencer Davis Group) lends his guitar work to the recording, joining Kevin Jarvis on drums (Bo Diddley, Lucinda Williams, Brian Wilson, Steve Wynn), David J. Carpenter on bass (John Doe, Dead Rock West), Chris Lawrence on pedal steel guitar (Mike Ness, Shooter Jennings), and Carl Byron (Hot Club of Los Angeles) handling accordion and keyboards while Darice Bailey & Blues singer Teresa James are on board for background vocals. The rhythms march from a slow plea to a late-night road romp when “Drive Me Home” lowers its goals to ‘someone who can love me just enough to drive me home’. Broken Heart in a Honky Tonk gives its title track a runaway rhythm as David Serby puts a come-on into a 3-minute song, predicting “No Happy Endings”, and stiches a forward-thinking excuse into “Don’t Stay Fixed”. Putting the warm sound of wooden floors filled with scattered handfuls of sawdust into every note, David Serby saddles up gnarly guitar riffs in “Gone for Good”, dabs sweet Country backbeats on “Little Ol’ Bruise”, strums a caffeinated rhythm for “Flight Path”, and lets the map point South for a “Border Town Romance”.
