Music doesn’t get much cooler than when it is delivered by Buddy Miller. A Roots-Rock and Americana aficionado that can dole out Blues, Twang, and ballads with the best, his self-titled, first release in 15 years, is a colleague-filled affair. Miller’s dozen songs find him joined by the likes of Jim Lauderdale, Shawn Colvin, Emmylou Harris, and Lee Ann Womack. Surf-rock guitar, piano, and a steady drum beat kick off the record with the Roots Rocker, “As Long As I Have You” as the aforementioned Jim Lauderdale joins him on “Strange Desire”, a cut with hints of Rockabilly that serves as a Country groover. Dan Penn and Buddy Miller cover The Temptations, by way of Peter Tosh and Mick Jagger, with “Don’t Look Back”, giving the ballad a Gospel treatment. There are big, Psychedelic Blues riffs in “Losers Celebration” while The War and Treaty drop a proper Gospel ballad in “Lay Down the Burden.” A snare drum and pedal steel guitar kick off a Country power ballad sure to inspire a slow turn around a dancefloor with “Stop Me”, Lee Ann Womack’s harmonies under Millers vocals thickening up the song. “Till The Wheels Fall Off”, with its fiddle intro and the line ‘let’s get out alive while we still can” is the kind of ballad that aches for a big, slow singalong. While Buddy Miller can certainly stack a band deck, he keeps the closer simple, delivering “Masterpiece in the Sand” as a piano-driven crooner.
