The band name, and album title, may have you popping the popcorn and grabbing a seat in front of a television screen to stream a Saturday Night Scary Movie Fest featuring Blood Sucking Maniacs. The band Blood Sucking Maniacs, however, are far removed from violent attacks on heart-beating humans. They are a multi-generational band that welcomes both friends and family into the musical collective. Helmed by parental units Terry Allen and Jo Harvey Allen, Blood Sucking Manicas spans five-generations with a list of contributors that includes the sons of the patriarch/matriarch heading the project, Bale and Bukka Allen, and grandsons Kru, Sled, and Calder Allen. Members of the Terry Allen Panhandle Mystery Band, Charlie Sexton, Lloyd Maines, and Richard Bowden are part of the collective as well frequent collaborator Will Sexton.
After a slight ambient musical moment, the self-titled debut begins the song cycle on the chug-a-lug rhythms that support the choir of voices introducing themselves as “Blood Sucking Maniacs”. Spoken word segments appear alongside the songs with the Cowboy Poetry of “Santa Fe” while musical treasures are handed down as family traditions with “Peaches and Sap”. History is told in the tale of “Bloodlines” as heritage is captured as an audio snapshot for “Where We Belong”. Blood Sucking Maniacs is a gently swaying collection of songs that gracefully gathers the extended Allen Family together, sharing the beauty of songs with the world, the rhythms of the music traveling from a slowly-trudging train-track beat that rides underneath “No Rush to Fly” and the magic of a desert after dark stirring in the echoey groove of “Arroyo Nights”.
