If an alien landed on Earth wanting to know a bit about the world maybe direct them toward a singer-songwriter like Aaron Lee Tasjan. Through his view on Get Over it, Underdog said alien may get a good look at the world through the eyes of someone immersed in human condition. A singer who will comment or question everything around him, and do it on a laidback, dreamy, Folk Rock vibe.
Those comments on the state of the world and its history kick in with the first track, “Science Friction” finding Tasjan doing his best-spoken word delivery to question the growing machine that may have begun with Christopher Columbus. Aaron LeeTasjan lets the listener define “Clown Show” while “Lost & Alone” kicks the laidback vibe aside for an up-tempo bounce on a Marshall Crenshaw inspired Pop gem, and “Lydia’s Boots” returns to the dreamily psychedelic tapestry as Tasjan nods to a colleague.
“Twilight Zone Blues” is a cool Rocker that asks you to take a chance, advising the push of a mysterious button with the line ‘there’s only one way to get what’s coming to you’; an ambiguous phrase that comes via a hip score to the song. “Ballad of an East Canton Lowlife” is even more hipness that has a lyrical touch of Bukowski and “The Real” comes via a co-write with the late Todd Snider, a mentor to Aaron Lee Tasjan who likely influenced his keen but dosed-reality world view.
The lyrics of Get Over It, Underdog read like Beat Poetry, the music plays like experimental Folk Rock where nothing boundaries do not exist. Aaron Lee Tasjan includes symphonic elements as well as stabbing, Acid Rock guitar riffs. Get Over It, Underdog is a solid package of cool. (by Bryant Liggett)
