Going viral on clips filmed on his SmartPhone, Jesse Welles used the backwoods of his native Alabama as a backdrop for his stripped-down songs. His move to the recording studio saw two album releases in 2024, and he returns in 2025 with a new release, Middle, and makes his Alt Root chart debut at #1 with “Horses” for the weekly Top Ten for Wednesday March 19, 2025. Rhiannon Giddens partners with Justin Robinson for an upcoming (04-18-25) release of North Carolina fiddle and banjo music, What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow?, the duo on the list with an Etta Baker tune, “Marching Jaybirds”. Mumford & Son deliver “Rushmere”, the title track from their upcoming (03-28-25) release, Joanne Shaw Taylor asks “What Are You Gonna Do Now?”, a cut from her upcoming (06-13-25) Black & Gold, Pretend Friend are “Dancing Up and Down” on a new single, and Southwest songman, Michael Rudd recalls a time “Before the Demons Came” with a track found on his upcoming (03-28-25) release, Going to the Mountain. Legendary Roots Rockers Little Feat have an upcoming (05-09-25) release, Strike Up the Band, and proudly own “Too High to Cut My Hair” on the chart. A shared appreciation for the importance of Gospel music, and the musicians who created the songs, drew Drunken Prayer (Morgan Geer) and Drive-By Truckers bassist Bobby Matt Patton into the studio to create a Cosmic Gospel record. The result is Thy Burdens, the upcoming (06-06-25) release from Drunken Prayer, who offers an advance listen with “Rock of Ages”. The Bones of J.R. Jones sing of “Savages” with a song from the upcoming (06-20-25) Radio Waves as Mike Blair & The Stonewalls close out this week’s list when the Wilmington, North Carolina band exit with “My Heart Belongs to Me” on the weekly Top Ten for Wednesday March 19, 2025.
