Alt Root Weekly Top Ten 02/05/2025
Love is in the air, along with the sound of music, when Gary Louris (The Jayhawks) delivers his upcoming release, Dark Country, dedicating the songs to his wife, Stephanie, adding to the romance by releasing on Valentine’s Day (01-14-25). The album, his third solo outing, offers an advance listen with Gary weighing in on “Getting Older”, sharing the that the story ‘is a song about that gray area of a relationship…it’s neither awful nor transcendent, neither loving nor abusive. It’s about the courage it may take to extricate oneself from that relationship to pursue true happiness, knowing life is too short to settle for anything less’. Colorado cowboy Charley Crockett offers the title track to his upcoming (03-14-25) release, Lonesome Drifter, while Red Oak Troubadours offer the encouragement to get through a day with “Pick Myself Up”. Jeffrey Broussard & The Nighttime Syndicate shout out “Hello Baby”, backed by the sweet sound of Cajun music, on a new single as Larkin Poe explain “Easy Love, Pt. 1”, and Liz Longley embraces those special moments in her day with “So Good”, a cut from her upcoming (03-21-25) release, New Life. Harmonica man Charlie Musselwhite issues a weather report of “Storm Warning” with a tune from an upcoming Spring release as Bryan Hill & The Layabouts ride a dark groove for “Dream On” and Scott Bentley sees a break-up as an analogy in his single, “Fool Becomes a Rose”. Vicki Peterson (The Bangles, The Continental Drifters) and husband John Cowsill (The Cowsills, The Continental Drifters, The Beach Boys) cover “A Thousand Times” from brother Bill Cowsill’s band, The Blue Shadows, offering the cut as an advance for the upcoming Spring release, Long After the Fire (a tribute to Cowsill brothers Barry and Bill) on the weekly Top Ten for Wednesday February 5, 2025.
