We Banjo 3 (from the album Roots to Rise Live available as a self-release)
Two sets of brothers comprise the four members of We Banjo 3. Rather than resting solely on claims a top live act out of Ireland, We Banjo 3 recorded a run in February, 2019 at The Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan to provide proof, releasing Roots to Rise Live. The live setting, the mix of banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, bodhran, and percussion back David Howley as he takes on the vocals for We Banjo 3. On the primarily instrumental album, David is joined by his brother Martin Howley alongside Enda (banjo) and Fergal (fiddle) Scahill, the quartet kicking open the doors to Roots to Rise Live with a frenzy of sound, the roar of the crowd quieting once We Banjo 3 find their groove in “Shine On”. The band hush their playing for the gentle “Marry Me Monday”, pick up the pace to question the mirror on the wall in “Tell Me Why”, find safety in the optimism of “Haven”, and sit amid notes flickering like a thousand fireflies to listen to night sky wisdom of “Hold on to Your Soul”.
Calendar pages are turned back to another time when We Banjo 3 play a front parlor reel with “John Brown’s”, the fan favorite tune ripping off its classically themed opening to set the song on fire by the track’s end. Roots to Rise Live introduces “Little Liza Jane” as We Banjo 3 pound out a beat to lay the foundation for “Trying to Love” and raise the roof with the rhythms of “Good Times Old Times” as the song shows an exit to the album. Roots to Rise Livewas released in conjunction with the We Banjo 3 summer and fall 2019 US tour, which continues to support Mental Health America raising awareness for the organization and funds with a $2.00 donation from the sale of every t-shirt and CD going to MHA.
