![]() We Banjo 3 (from the album Haven available as a self-release) No one likes labels on musicians that puts music in a marketable box. Exceptions, of course, come when the band hangs their own shingle on a sound, much like We Banjo 3 have done with Celtgrass. Blending Old Time music with traditional Irish sounds, We Banjo 3 forge a brand of Bluegrass that shines a light on the future of the genre with their recent release, Haven. Playful licks bounce off “Sugar House”, the rhythm accelerating like a candy rush while the quartet look to the heavens for “Light in the Sky” and load “Annabelle’s Cannon” to explode with notes flickering like fireflies. Two sets of brothers are the band for We Banjo 3. Enda (banjo, mandolin, tenor guitar) and Fergal (fiddle, guitar, bodhrán) Scahill and Martin (banjo, mandolin, tenor guitar) and David Howley (vocals, banjo, guitar) came together in their native Galway, Ireland. We Banjo 3 garnered awards for traditional Irish music with their 2010 debut, continuing to push the borders of tradition with Haven, their fourth studio album release. The title track opens the album with a sparkle of notes as We Banjo 3 nurture a fantasy land in words and music. Haven strums life into “Sunflower” with strings and harmony, plays a Country banjo as “Pack It Up” heads for home, and says goodbye on a whispered melody for “War of Love” while We Banjo 3 spin a reel to make an instrumental request on “Marry Me Monday”.
