![]() The Small Glories (from the album Assiniboine & The Red available on Red House Records)The Small Glories, Cara Luft and JD Edwards, are a perfect fit. As a musical duo, the assumption could be that perfection the pair call their own is found in their abilities to harmonize and keep time. True statements, though limiting given the circle The Small Glories wrap around their singing, songwriting and performing. The interaction of The Small Glories brings harmony to the songs, stories, and stage banter from the Canadian musicians. A chance meeting when Cara and JD were put together during an anniversary for the West End Cultural Centre in their native Winnipeg, Canada created a band. The Small Glories speak of special moments that make a hometown when they champion “Winnipeg” in their recent release, Assiniboine & The Red, opening the album with the first cut looking towards the Rocky Mountains of “Alberta” that stand on the horizon like morning light. An original member of The Wailin’ Jennys, Cara Luft brings her banjo and voice to The Small Glories, blending into one with the guitar strums of JD Edwards, their souls mated in the music. A mist of sound is a canvas for “Pieces of Me”, the voices of The Small Glories writing the story, putting the words on the blank page created by the sonics. A backroad sway is the rhythm for “Oh My Love” as ragged notes stich out “Long Long Moon” and thoughtful strums ground the truth from the source in “Secondhand” while Assiniboine & The Red shrugs its shoulders with a touch of Country in “You Can’t Be High”. The percussion is the podium when The Small Glories take to the pulpit to tell of “Johnson Slide” and encourage staying in-it-til-you-win-it with “Don’t Back Down” as the pair make a stage of Assiniboine & The Red to speak of the pride they feel for their chosen career of Folk Singer in “Sing”.
