![]() The Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Greunling (from the album The High Cost of Low Living available on Alligator Records) Receiving a Master’s education in Chicago Blues styles, Nick Moss turns his sights towards society as a whole, the Bluesman is here to teach The High Cost of Low Living, the recent release from The Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Gruenling. Produced by Nick Moss and Kid Andersen (Rick Estrin & The Nightcats) at Rancho de Rhythm in Elgin, Illinois, The High Cost of Low Living features a band of Blues traditionalists that play hands-on lessons learned in Blues school of hard knocks, advancing the sound and amping up the excitement by taking the style a step further into the future. The High Cost of Low Living partners Nick Moss and Dennis Gruenling on album for the first time. Growing up in Chicago, Nick Moss had his goals of a music/sports life sidelined by health issues. Throwing himself into the Blues, he found himself part of hometown A-list bands, backing West Side legend Jimmy ‘Fast Fingers’ Dawkins, touring with two former Muddy Waters sidemen, first in Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith’s (drums) Legendary Blues Band before being hired by guitarist Jimmy Rogers, who took on the role of mentoring the younger player. Dennis Greunling is self-taught on the harmonica, hearing his calling within the grooves of the Alligator Records release, Harp Attack! That featured players such as Jimmy Cotton, Junior Wells, Carey Bell, and Billy Branch. The Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Gruenling spends time detailing history as a Blues experience, relating the tale in “He Walked with Giants (Ode to Barrelhouse Chuck)”. The High Cost of Low Living fills the Blues gas tank with Rock’n’Roll riffs on the title track, shuffles in with advice to a friend in “Tight Grip on Your Leash”, warns “Get Your Hands Out of My Pockets” on a fast-tracked groove, and adds horns to high-step “Get Right Before You Get Left” uptown on a hyper-active Saturday night beat. Both Nick Moss and Dennis Greunling credit Alligator Records’ influence on their playing as they release their joint effort on the label. The Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Gruenling look for some rail lines as they walk with a Rock’n’Blues strut into “Rambling on My Mind”, share love troubles on the roadhouse beat of “Crazy Mixed Up Baby”, and sink low, the groove matching the mood as they read “Note on the Door” as The High Cost of Low Living quick steps into “All Night Diner”.
