The Mastersons (from the album No Time for Love Songs available on Red House Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Los Angeles, California duo The Masterton’s latest, No Time for Love Songs, comes across crisp and clean. With a sunny, Southern California vibe, No Time for Love Songs is pretty, polished, and easy to digest. Time spent backing Country Roots Rocker Steve Earle in his whip-good band The Dukes has given Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore (aka The Mastersons) plenty of time to exercise their ability to bang out the Country Rock, but The Mastersons prove no one-trick pony as No Time for Love Songs showcases an ability to slow down to a comfortable pace as the tracks explore bright, Roots-riddled Pop music.
The Masterson get right to the point, stating in the cheery opener title track ‘I love you so much, but there’s no time for love songs’, standing in the same political camp as Steve Earle, and leaving the love songs right alongside the dead horse, the duo wants ‘to sing a song that will make you stop and think instead of turning a blind eye to all that’s wrong’. Eleanor Whitmore conveys a longing ache when she sings ‘you came along, and I was better for having you around’ in “Circle the Sun”, the ballad giving way to familiar Byrds-style guitar jangle on the rhythmically upbeat “Eyes Open Wide.” The duet on “The Silver Line” is beautifully rough around the edges and “There is a Song to Sing,” is stripped down and lonely, featuring sad vocals and a sadder fiddle. With Shooter Jennings handling the production on No Time for Love Songs, The Masterton’s prove they can lay out the harmonies that are the star of their ballads.  (by Bryant Liggett)
