![]() The Lee Boys (from the album Live from the East Coast available on M.C. Records) The tradition of the sacred steel guitar came from African-American Pentecostal churches, the sound movement growing in certain sects within the faith and spreading out to over twenty-states in the U.S. The Lee Boys plug in tradition and turn the volume up to eleven on Live from the East Coast. The band introduce the first track, offering a simple invite to dance with the phrase ‘we came here to have a good time, y’all’ as The Lee Boys enter the album on a marching beat with “In the Morning”. Live from the East Coastcruises on a highway rhythm for traditional tune “Don’t Let the Devil Ride” and steps out on a funky beat asking “Lord, Help Me to Hold Out”. The Lee Boys take their gospel cries to the dance floor, backing the words with group-vocals shouts to get the band cooking a little faster (“Help Me Lift Him Up”), slowing the groove to a simmer for a version of The Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There”, and sashaying down the aisle to salvation with Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland’s “Turn on Your Lovelight”. Live from the East Coastencourages to “Testify” on tapped out staccato street beats and sings for the spirit with Mississippi Fred McDowell’s “You Got to Move”.
