![]() The Grahams (from the album Kids Like Us available on Three Sirens Music Group) The one constant in Kids Like Us, the latest release from The Grahams is Alyssa Graham’s sultry and lounge-like vocals. Otherwise The Grahams, often labeled a Folk duo (at times anything but) are doing what they can to forgo any musical sounds and styles that create a label for the band. It is an unpredictability that gives their Kids Like Us a grab-bag appeal, where one song gets a breezy light Rock and another cut sounds like German New Wave dug up from the 1980’s post-rock dancefloors. The title track opener, with its bouncy and robotic rhythm is their road cut, a tune of escape with Alyssa singing ‘I want to shed my skin, forget my name” with the ultimate goal to “run through the night like a runaway train.” Cuts like “Painted Desert” and “Running Out of Time” have an ambient, dreamy air, while “Bite My Tongue” follows suit with the Kids Like Us title track and its electro rhythms while moving into synth Indie Pop territory. “One More Heartbreak” was written for a slow dance, “Heartbreak Town” is textbook R&B, and “Love Is My Cadillac” finds The Grahams introducing fuzzy guitars into a soulful and heavy on the grinding groove love song. The Kids Like Us closer sounds decades old and as fresh as next week. Fuzzy guitars play underneath a soulful groove, with Alyssa’s vocals crooning the backing girl-group‘sha-la-la’s’. “Searching the Milky Way (For Swift)” sums up the record, where Indie Rock lives right alongside dreamy melodies and modern R&B.
