The Delines (from the album The Sea Drift available on El Cortez Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
You will come for the laidback Country Soul and you’ll stay for the story. Portland, Oregon’s The Delines are another vehicle for the writing of Willy Vlautin, a songwriter and author whose narratives pull you in with their rich characters and even richer tales. Stories that have you rooting for the unlikely, every day, average hero, or reeling from a gut punch delivered to our hero. Sometimes you get both the victory cheer and the realistic let-down. The Delines latest, The Sea Drift, is another quick collection of vignettes that play out as chapters gathered in a volume of sad short stories. Vlautin’s details of place and person are all so picturesque; you can feel the sticky Gulf Coast heat, and experience first-hand the vague drama in “Little Earl” as you yearn to know the prequel of the tale. The same for “Kid Codeine”…you will want to know more. “Hold Me Slow” is ready for a soulful slow-dance, “Surfers in the Twilight” has a smoky, noir vibe, and the album closers, “Saved from the Sea” and “The Gulf Drift Lament”, play out like scores to this whole collection of short stories in song. Thick Roots Soul, and your narrator’s tone and delivery is the soft hush of Amy Boone, who whispers these stories right to the heart. It’s not fancy, there’s no musical theatrics or heroic solos, just a solid dose of musical reality delivered with a working class, clock in and clock out approach.
