![]() Dave Clark Five (from the album All the Hits available on BMG) Musically, the first British invasion brought together a diverse style of groups under one banner. While both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were in separate corners as good boys and bad boys (respectively) in the early 1960’s, they were still boy bands. Pop was clenched tightly by Gerry and the Pacemakers while The Animals took a bite out of the Blues. Northern Soul and hard R&B bands we miming the U.S. underground hits coming in from German military bases. In the middle of all the bands aiming at Pop targets, the Dave Clark Five spit out hit after hit with raw rock’n’roll. No pretense, the DC5 were the kings of the two-minute record, each track a blast out of the speakers. With Dave Clark keeping the hammered beat in place, lead vocalist Mike Smith was a Soul shouter, the tender “Come Home” and the gentle sway of “Because” perfect vehicles for vocals that teetered on the edge of breaking. Dave Clark pounds into opening cut, covering The Contours “Do You Love Me”, DC5 following with a full slate of multi-million selling originals, peers to the raw edge of American-made rock’n’roll from Little Richard and Fats Domino. All the Hits begins to roll with the Dave Clark Five’s massive hits “Glad All Over” and “Bits and Pieces”, steering into the whimsical rock of “Can’t You See That She’s Mine”, and the spotlight dance “Everybody Knows (I Still Love You)”…..and that is just the first five cuts on the compilation. All the Hits showcases cuts remastered with the precision of his original work by Dave Clark, heading into the Abbey Road Studios for the recently released package, making the results available on vinyl for the first time. The Dave Clark Five sold over 100 million records, appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show a record-breaking eighteen times and notching fifteen consecutive top twenty records over a two-year period. “Catch Us If You Can” and “Wild Weekend” were both title tracks for the same film as The Dave Clark Five-starred vehicle changed names for U.S. release in the mid-60’s. While All the Hits of the band were specific to a certain time, the music captured is timeless, staying as feral and keeping its bite when The Dave Clark Five sing of a night out in “Over and Over”, blast across “Any Way You Want It”, pile into the car to cross the tracks into “I Like It Like That”, and rip up the dance floor with Chuck Berry’s “Reelin’ and Rockin’”.
