The Connells (from the album Steadman’s Wake available on Missing Piece Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
In the early 2000’s, The Connells followed fifteen years of touring and eight album releases with a much-needed break. Time rolled along and songs were written. After a fifteen-year hiatus, The Connells entered the studio with a batch of tracks, resulting in the recent release, Steadman’s Wake. The album contains eight new cuts and three re-worked selections from previous efforts. Guitar jangle announces the return of The Connells on the opening tune “Really Great”. The cut hits the ground running as the excitement of the band comes through loud and clear amid pounding beats, weaving guitar leads, and the power of Roots Rock’n’Roll. Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, The Connells present Steadman’s Wake as a seamless addition to their catalog, the songs erasing the time between releases. A Celtic tone raises a toast on the title track as Steadman’s Wake seals a mighty backbeat to the album with “Universal Glue”. A rumble of percussion slowly opens the curtains on “Song for Duncan” as “Stars” surrounds its sound with guitar notes sparkling like a night sky and confidence strides alongside the persistent groove in “Gladiator Heart”. Forming in 1984 at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC, The Connells keep the beat strong as they approach their fourth decade as a band with the Indie Rock rhythmic sway of “Hello Water”, the solid backbeat providing a foundation for the rambling guitar in “Burial Art” as they exit Steadman’s Wake on the roller coaster light/heavy sonics of “Helium”.
