![]() The Chefs (from the album Heated and Treated available on Secret Dungeon Records) Bobbing and weaving like a grass skirt in a wind storm, The Chefs wriggle into their recent release, Heated & Treated, with opening cut “Hippy Surf Party”. The guitar lines that ramble through the track are from the former Georgia Satellites and Homemade Sin frontman, Dan Baird. Following some medical hiccups, Dan retired for about a minute picked up his guitar, and went into the studio with old buddy Stan Lynch (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers). Sunshine spreads from the bright riffs in “66” as a steady rhythm keeps the wheels turning beneath “Night Drivin’”, sharp guitar notes poking the groove like headlights searching a dark highway as The Chefs serve up “Downtown” with chopped and diced six-string leads. The eleven instrumentals on Heated and Treated roll like musical moments for film. The string bends on “Hurricane” whip around like trees in a storm while the rigid notes of “Keep Calm” form a solid foundation for its bouncing twang riffs with the percussive rhythms of “Clint” defining the cut as “Obligatory Chase Scene” dabs the noir spy mood with surf licks. A swaying jangle moves across “My Babe’s on Weed”, The Chefs heading for an exit from Heated and Treated on the track, a tambourine rattle and thick reverb notes closing the door on a fine dose of three-minute plus mood alteration breaks.
